Some Furniture Rearranging

I don’t know why, but our family room has become such an ordeal for us. We are used to having built-in shelving in all of our homes, and there just isn’t the space for that in this house. I brought in a interior designer and she was highly against putting in built-ins since they will make the room look extremely small.  What stressed me out about her vetoing the built-ins, was that I had no idea where we would put any of our pictures, decor, vases, etc.  I was banking on this room to display our pretty things.  She recommended some shelving above the couch, and at the time I loved the idea, but this was months ago. Now, I am over it.  I found a pretty shelving unit that would go over the couch, but it was really expensive, and if we can’t use it in our next house, it seems like a waste to me because it definitely won’t help with resale. David had some more ideas that I wasn’t a huge fan of.  I really was just losing hope and getting impatient with this room.

I decided to try out Modsy to see if they could give me a fresh idea. This site is super cool, you fill out a type profile, take photos and dimensions of your room, and they send you a design including items you could actually purchase!

This was the (unfinished)room before we used Modsy:They suggested moving the piano to the wall that separates the kitchen from the family room, also the wall the piano is perpendicular to. That seemed perfect when looking at it, but once we moved it there, it just made the room even more cluttered than it already was, and the piano was a little too big for the wall. This got our wheels turning, and David suggested moving the piano to the wall pictured below.  We thought we would eliminate one of our giant chairs, and we could replace it with greenery or a pretty lamp to go next to the piano.I sent Modsy a new picture of our layout, and they came back with the perfect design.  They suggested moving the chair we eliminated to where the piano used to be, but David thought that maybe we could do a built in corner unit there instead, that way we have a place to display our pretty things and it won’t take up too much space.

I still have no idea if we will go with Modsy’s idea or David’s, but it’s amazing how one change can give us a plethora of new ideas.  I think that we are on to something with this room, and I am finally getting excited about it.

Now, if only the laundry room, mudroom, and garage were finished…
